James studied law at Nottingham University and qualified at Hammonds in September 2001. He joins the firm from Hammonds as partner and head of Commercial and Intellectual Property.

His areas of expertise include both contentious and non-contentious intellectual property (IP) matters and also general commercial agreements. On the IP side, his practice focuses in particular on the exploitation and enforcement of patents, trademarks and design rights. On the commercial side he is experienced in drafting, negotiating and advising on sale and purchasing agreements, distribution agreements, computer contracts, confidentiality agreements and other commercial contracts. James has also spent four months working in the in-house legal department of Matalan Retail Ltd.
