Innovate, prosper, protect
The UK Government has identified intellectual property (IP) rights as being a key element in maintaining the country’s economic competitiveness in the 21st century. The world’s biggest and best-run companies extract maximum value from their innovation by using the intellectual property regime in key markets to establish rights over their main revenue-generating product and service lines, which are then vigorously enforced.
Unfortunately, a survey of IP awareness among UK companies recently published by the UK Intellectual Property Office shows that, while there are high levels of innovation within UK industry, there is generally a lack of sufficient knowledge about the system of protecting that innovation by the use of IP rights.
That lack of awareness is most pronounced in small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) of between 10 and 250 employees, and micro-enterprises of up to 9 employees. Yet at the same time, the research showed that due to their sheer numbers, micro-enterprises contribute more innovative new products and services to the market than any other category of firm.
